PARIYARAM INAMS UNIT - A GLIMPSE

PARIYARAM INAMS UNIT - A GLIMPSE

Pariyaram is a serene, sleepy village in the heartland of Kottayam district.  Though blessed with nine Christian congregations three of which are Orthodox, the chapter at the St. Thomas Church is the only somewhat actively functioning INAMS unit currently.  It traces its origin to a Sunday in early 2011, when the Vicar , Rev. Fr. Kurian Uthup, Kannanthuruthel made a dramatic announcement after the Holy Mass, that a unit of the hitherto unheard of movement, INAMS, shall soon be established there, and that a retired Principal, who had never held any official position in the congregation, shall serve as its Vice President.
The first ever meeting took place on the 13th of February, 2011 with 12 volunteering men and women, 11 Juniors, and 30 visiting members from other established INAMS units.  Prof. P. K. Kurien’s inaugural words outlined the salient features of the movement, emphasizing the charity mission of INAMS, and its strict adherence to the voluntary dedication of the tithe of the assets of the members, viz. wealth, health, time, and influence through social connections, without aspiring for any official position.  Account keeping shall be minimal as collections, if any, shall be anonymous and shall promptly be given away, except the voluntary monthly contribution towards the then MIFMO, now JMF.
Throughout 2011 regular monthly meets were held with brief discussions on Biblical themes.  Miniscule charity works were carried out utilizing voluntary contributions.  And.  our representatives attended Kottayam area meetings, one-day conferences and children’s camps.
Then, in the December of 2012, a gentleman approached us with a cheque of Rs.70,000 for charity.  This necessitated the opening of a bank account for the first time ever, a Fixed Deposit,  whose interest shall be used for supplying a kit of essential provisions to a needy family every month.  Soon another donation of Rs. 60,000 came in, followed by more sponsorship for two more needy families.
Finding out the truly deserving beneficiaries of charity, was one of the major  challenges we faced.    We even had to discontinue a couple of cases when it came out that the beneficiary was misusing the charity, or did not follow in with the effort they themselves were capable of.
Though not by design, we are happy that all the beneficiaries of our charity movement turned out to be either Hindus or non-Orthodox Christians.  Till June 2013, our outgoings were to the tune of one lac four thousand only.  This was including the bank deposit. The amount spent on charity in the initial year was only 30,000.  The charity works continue in 2014, jointly and severally, with some individual members doing their part independently.
At the moment,  the Junior members see to it that monthly provisions costing  Rs 500 to Rs 600 per kit, are reaching  4 needy families every month.  The enthusiasm with which the youngsters do their service and the satisfaction they derive out of this, are commendable.  We are sure that this trend, once built in, will stay on with them for the whole of their lifetime.  God bless them.
Regular visits by Prof.  Kurien, and occasional visits by other INAMS units members, are definitely an encouraging feature .  We eagerly look forward to more such interaction.  On our part, one of our members, Mr. Tom Thomas Kuzhivelil, has been delivering inspiring exhortation in neighbouring Orthodox congregations in connection with Mission Sundays.
Hope and pray that His Great Benevolence will lead us on making possible the continued participation and enthusiastic involvement of all the existing members and bringing in more willing volunteers to the fold.

                               Vice President,
                            Pariyaram INAMS.

MISSION SOCIETY AND MISSION BOARD

MISSION SOCIETY AND

 MISSION BOARD

Orthodox Church which has been existing in India for the last two thousand years has started the mission society and mission board to fulfil its mission in India and hence to activate Indian Christianization. Our forefathers could declare the strong presence of God in the land through their witnessing life. From the time of St. Gregarious of Parumala itself organized missionary activities were there in India. In the time of H. G. Pathrose Mar Osthathios, mission among the gentiles became very active. But by the formation of Mission society and Mission Board the Christian mission was taken up by the Church as a whole. The Society initiates and leads mission centres all over India. Kalhandi in Orissa is a place where a lot of people die of starvation. Balagrams are functioning under Mission Board at four places in Kalhandi. Education for poor children, works among the illiterate who lives in the woods, dispensaries which provides medical assistance etc are some of the field of activities there. Yacharam St. Gregorios Balagram in Andhra Pradesh, the eye clinic associated with it, St George Balikagram in Pune, Itarsy Balagram, Karasseri Karunya Bhavan in TamilNadu, etc are all functioning efficiently. These centres extend education and medical assistance to the neighboring villages also.
Not only that, the centre teaches Orthodox faith to the Christians there and equips them for missionary works in the villages around. The Bhilai Maccodia mission works efficiently in the field of education and rural development in North India. St Gregorios Daya Bhavan near Bangalore looks after children of AIDS patients. The palliative Care Centre attached to Daya Bhavan is working to give peace and hope to the dying aids patients "Sneha Sandesam" is a traveling Gospel project which works in Indian evangelization and for the spiritual development of the faithful. More than one thousand five hundred programme has been conducted across sixteen states of India. NARSOC is an associated organization which is formed to give assistance to those who are suffering from natural disasters. At the time of the earthquake of Gujarat and tsunami the organization took initiative in rehabilating hundreds of people. There are only a few among the various activities of the Mission Board.
